I went to the Youpi Party @ Studio B which was basically a French showcase. I thought back to my many years of taking French in Highschool and when the lead singer of Love My Neighbors spoke to the crowd in French, I pretended I knew what he was saying. I Love My Neighbors was a cool band. Real laid back. They preformed early so there was only like 10-15 people in the club, but they still rocked. The lead singer was making jokes about how they were really big in France and he kept saying, "because it's cooool". They did a "cool" version of that song "Bang, Bang", the one from Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill...very nice! Watching the lead singer of the band just end songs with no vibrato or hype made me realize that French people could really give two shits.
Earlier in the night I saw the Ting Tings perform @ the Bowery Ballroom. That was a great way to start the night. Short show but very exhilarating. The drummer (male) of the group was amazing. Not much else to say other than they only performed for about half an hour. I didn't catch any opening acts either so I was literally in and than out. I was sort of surprised to see a decent male showing. That last line sounds a bit suspect but I didn't think so many guys liked the Ting Tings. Oh well.
At the French showcase thing I met this girl that recognized me from the Vampire Weekend concert, named Chanelle. She's from England and was over here to study theater. I had already paid to get into Studio B but Chanelle and her friend(can't remember) her name were still debating about whether or not they should head in. Girls are always trying to find away to get stuff for free and sadly, it usually works. Chanelle and her friend were trying to put on French accents so they could get on the guest list and see the show for nothing...haha!
I hung out with Chanelle and her friend for a little, drinking Coca Cola(wink) and Orange Soda that tasted like cough syrup(wink). We eventually decided to all go in and see what was going on inside the venue. T girls paid and turned the corner only to see that the club was still pretty much empty. There were probably 20-30 people there now, in a venue that could hold over a 1000 people. Chanelle didn't stay for more than 10 seconds before she turned around to go and fetch her money, before I knew it, we were back on the streets.
Around 1am I caught a cab, said goodbye to Chanelle and her friend. I made them promise that were going to hang out the next day. I said we would get fake ID's and catch a free show, I even said I would take them out to dinner(yeah right). As I sat in the back on the cab, pondering about whether or not I would make my train, I also thought to myself, would this be the last time I see Chanelle?
To be Continued.
