Another movie I was late to see. Rented the film from a local store, watched most of it last night and finished the rest this morning.
I think people expecting a laugh out loud comedy like they see on The Chappelle show will be disappointed, that wasn't the point of this movie. What I got from this movie was the REAL Chappelle. I can see why he walked away from his show and all the money. It's obvious that Dave likes the money and the fame but only to a certain extent. The film allows us to see how passionate Chappelle is about giving back. When you see him interacting with just honest everyday people it humbles you.
I've never seen so many good black people in one place, HAHA. Honestly, there was no talk about jewelry, or guns, or violence or "bitches", it was all positive. This made me realize that there are only a handful of rappers that can be called musicians. I found myself rocking out to all these artists even though I don't know all of their songs. I can't imagine what it would have been like to see these guys perform live.
It should be noted, this film is NOT a documentary. It might appear to be a documentary but that's only because it was intended to have that look. If you watch the documentary or even the movie itself, no one ever refers to it as a documentary. Michel Gondry is the reason why I even picked up this film. Gondry is a genius, some of the scenes remind me of Eternal Sunshine, he added the "feel good" element to the movie.
I walked away happy and hopefully one day I'll be able to use my legacy to put on a show like this and help everyday people.
one love,
