Last night I finally saw Requeim for a Dream. The film was one of those movies that I had never gotten a chance to view but heard a lot about. Everyone that mentioned the film always described it as "f***'d up!" I rented the movie from a local store, turned off the lights and prepared myself for the worst.
I can only really describe this movie as a ride. It would be like a roller coaster ride in reverse. The film starts off relatively mellow compared to what you're hit with at the end. By the end of the movie I was damn near crawled up in a ball just like all the characters in the film. Let me say, Darren Aronofsky is a brilliant director. This is the only film i've seen by him but he really impressed me with the way he told the story. I love how he left mystery behind the drugs, you never really know that they're doing heroin or what medication the mom is taking, it's all relative. Whats amazing about this movie is Aronofsky captures so much conflict with in the 90 minutes of film. Think about all the relationships in the movie and how much tension there is between characters; don't leave out the relationship between the drugs and the users.
I can honestly say Requeim for a Dream is the scariest film i've seen. It beats Saw III, Hostel I, Touristas and every other horror movie because this film has an organic quality that makes me cringe. Most movies glorify drugs, this film does nothing of the sort. The end of the film really puts everything into perspective, I'm sure it made a few people cry.
I suggest everyone see the film. Don't let other people tell you about it, they're all wrong, including me. If you want to be a filmmaker or a writer, I HIGHLY (no pun intended) suggest you see the film because it will make you better at what you want to do.
