According to reports, Radiohead sold over a million downloads of their latest album, 'In Rainbows'. Based on 3000 reports, Radiohead stands to make over 9million dollars. Of course these figures aren't exact, for all we know they're entirely fabricated but if you think about it, it makes perfect sense. About a third of the fans choose to pay absolutely nothing but the average price was around 4 pounds about half of what it would normally cost to buy an album (itunes, amazon, etc) and then over 50% paid over 10 pounds.
I think this is great for the industry and great for Radiohead. I don't think it was their intention to make millions of this record but hey, I'm sure they're not complaining. In the future I could see other artists following suit but honestly it would have to be the right group. Radiohead has a wide range of fans and most of all they're well respected as musicians. I wouldn't suggest 50 cent trying to pull this off.
cheers and goodnight,
